The ref. 52506 is by far the best iteration of the modern 1908. The ice-blue dial immediately identifies it as a platinum Rolex, but it is the rice-grain guilloché that gives this version its real character. The pattern radiates outward from the small seconds, creating texture and movement without disturbing the restrained, old-school dress-watch layout. Its polished platinum case is finished with an unusual bezel that is partly domed and partly fluted—a subtle Rolex signature that looks much sharper in person than it does in press images. Through the sapphire caseback, Rolex’s caliber 7140 is fully visible, with a Syloxi hairspring, Chronergy escapement and approximately 66 hours of power reserve. This example is fitted with a new genuine Rolex brown alligator strap and folding Dualclasp. The warmer brown strap suits the ice-blue dial particularly well, making the 52506 feel less formal and giving one of Rolex’s most traditional watches a more relaxed, collector-oriented personality.
