Montblanc's designers didn't invent the color of this dial. They found it. Following the route up the Chamonix valley to the Mer de Glace, the main glacier of the Mont Blanc massif, they encountered a green unlike any standard dial treatment: the result of microscopic snow algae blooms frozen into Antarctic ice over thousands of years. That green now lives on the case of the 1858 Iced Sea, rendered through gratté-boisé, an almost forgotten ancestral texturing technique that gives the dial a crystalline depth that shifts as light moves across it, less a color than a landscape compressed into 41mm. The bicolor unidirectional ceramic bezel, SuperLuminova-filled applied indices and Arabic numerals, domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating, and a Minerva-engraved caseback complete a dive watch that earns its ISO 6425 certification and 300 meters of water resistance without sacrificing a single design intention. Calibre MB 24.17 powers it automatically at 28,800 vph with 38 hours of power reserve. The Iced Sea is Montblanc's first diving watch, and it arrived fully formed.
