Montblanc's designers followed the Mer de Glace, the great glacier of the Mont Blanc massif, and found a gray unlike anything achieved through conventional dial production, the result of minerals locked into ice over millennia. Reproducing it required reviving gratté-boisé, an almost forgotten ancestral texturing technique that gives the dial its crystalline, layered depth, the impression of looking through ice rather than at a surface. The gray ceramic unidirectional bezel ties the composition together with a material cohesion that lesser dive watches achieve only accidentally. The 41mm stainless steel case carries an elaborate relief engraving of an iceberg and a diver on the caseback, a detail most owners discover slowly. Calibre MB 24.17 powers it automatically with ISO 6425 dive watch certification and 300 meters of water resistance, rhodium-coated Arabic numerals and SuperLuminova-filled hands ensuring legibility at depth.
