Necessity breed innovation (sometimes war), but rarely is it Haute Horlogerie. 

Hublot consistently pushes the boundaries of watch engineering with their Orlinksi series. Richard Orlinski is known for creating aggressive designs using sharp, geometric facets that split light. His sculptures are finished with smooth surfaces using glossy electrifying colors while staying away from traditional materials like metal or marble.

Hublot's first challenge was overcoming the extreme heat that instantly burns bright colour pigments when baking ceramic at 2800 degrees. While most watchmakers were traditionally bound to using black, white or dull pastel tones in their ceramic watches because of this, Hublot took 4 years to invent a technique homogenizing the color entirely through the ceramic allowing them to use eye-catching colors like candy red, electric blue, glossy black, etc.

This gave rise to Hublot's second challenge. Unlike regular ceramic, Hublot's newly patented sintering method gave its ceramic a diamond-like hardness which made milling impossible with traditional machines. It required frequent recalibrations and re-fitting of diamond cutters increasing the production time of a single case. To cut and polish this harder ceramic, Hublot invented a new finishing technique achieving mirror-smooth surfaces with razor-sharp edges that catch and scatter light.

So what's special about this Classic Fusion?

Never before has any watchmaker milled a ceramic dial thinner than a millimeter to look like an origami-like 3D sculpture. Because of these undulating peaks, the hands clear microns between the dial and crystal. Firing a ceramic plate this thin with uneven geometry would warp or crack in the furnace. This required Hublot to invent its own technique to slice, mill and polish a single 0.4mm dial out of a ceramic block.

The HublotXOrlinski collaboration did not involve slapping a logo on a dial or engraving a case back. It carries the artist's vision in the engineering, chemistry and case architecture of the timepiece. At $14,800 brand new, Hublot didn't just bring a new product to market. In aims of doing something no other watchmaker has, they innovated their way into a new path for other manufacturers to follow.
